The União Continental was built in 1973 by Sorenc. Its L-shaped configuration made it possible to implement two active facades on the ground floor during the retrofit.
The project by MMBB Arquitetura took advantage of the regular, unstructured structure to create studios with large, integrated spaces, as well as apartments with 1 or 2 bedrooms. During the renovation, the União Continental gained new common areas, such as a gym, laundry room, terrace and multipurpose rooms.
Materials such as steel, copper, aluminum, old glass domes and acrylic pieces found in the União Continental during its retrofit were recycled and turned into new light fixtures, and at least 50% of all the furniture in the building was made from reforested wood and naval plywood, including sideboards, cabinets, side tables and beds.
